If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to update your version of Quickbooks Desktop. As of the end of May, Intuit no longer supports Desktop versions from 2020 or earlier. If you are on any version of QuickBooks Desktop 2020, you are no longer able to download transactions from your bank and payroll will not be updated with the current tax tables or features.

For some time now, Intuit has heavily promoted their cloud-based solution, QuickBooks Online, and is moving to a subscription-based model for all QuickBooks Desktop versions. In our experience, this has made finding the desktop versions quite the task, as the website prefers to re-direct visitors over to their online, cloud-based offerings. The fastest route to finding the product you are looking for is to go to the QuickBooks Downloads & Updates page where you can purchase the newest version of Quickbooks Pro, or other versions, and immediately download the file.

There are still three business versions of QuickBooks Desktop within this new model: Pro, Premier, and Enterprise. They are all subscription-based products that will need to be renewed and paid for annually, unlike the older versions. The most popular desktop version is QuickBooks Pro, which has a yearly price tag of $500 for one user, or approximately $42 a month. If you add the additional payroll subscription, the total cost increases to $1,050 per year, or $88 a month for one user. The price fluctuates depending on the number of users.

All QuickBooks Desktop products offer the same base features, such as: record accounts payable and expenses, create and send sales invoices, receive payments online, track jobs costs, and track inventory.

  • QuickBooks Pro is meant for generalized small businesses and allows up to three users per license, best for companies with common transactions that need a basic level of reporting.
  • QuickBooks Premier is an industry specific based software, best for non-profits, manufacturing, contracting, and professional service companies that have more complex transactions and reporting needs. This version has 150 industry-specific reports and allows companies to track and bill job phases on a progressive basis. Five users are allowed per license.
  • QuickBooks Enterprise is the most robust offering, best for large companies with several users, especially those with users working in the software simultaneously as it allows thirty users per license.
